HYPE token and staking on Hyperliquid

13 min read

By the Totalis team. We build the combo platform for prediction markets on Hyperliquid.

HYPE is the native token of the Hyperliquid blockchain. You stake it on HyperCore by moving HYPE from your spot balance to your staking balance and delegating it to a validator. A delegation is locked for 1 day, and moving HYPE back to spot takes 7 days. Rewards come from a reserve of future emissions and compound daily. Staked HYPE also lowers your trading fees by up to 40%, and teams that deploy HIP-3 perps or HIP-4 outcome markets have to stake it.

This guide covers the protocol mechanics only. It makes no price forecast and is not investment advice. For how HYPE fits into the chain as a whole, start with what Hyperliquid is and how it works.

What is the HYPE token used for?#

HYPE does six jobs on Hyperliquid, and only one of them is consensus staking.

Governance also runs through stake. Validators vote with the stake delegated to them, and holders take part by delegating to a validator whose vote they agree with. The December 2025 vote on burning Assistance Fund HYPE was settled this way.

HYPE lives on both halves of the chain. On HyperCore it sits in your spot or staking balance. On HyperEVM it is the native gas coin. To move HYPE from HyperCore to HyperEVM you send it to the system address 0x2222222222222222222222222222222222222222 (HyperCore and HyperEVM transfers). Smart contracts that need an ERC-20 version use wrapped HYPE (WHYPE), a fixed system contract at 0x5555555555555555555555555555555555555555 with the same code as WETH (wrapped HYPE docs). For how the two environments share one chain, see HyperCore vs HyperEVM.

Gas does not mean every app needs HYPE from its users. Totalis, which publishes this guide and has no token, settles Combos of HIP-4 outcomes on HyperEVM and pays the gas on Combo trades, so traders in the Totalis app need only USDC. Its market makers do hold a little HYPE, because the maker setup guide has them send every vault transaction from their own wallet.

How do I stake HYPE on Hyperliquid?#

Staking runs inside HyperCore, and Hyperliquid uses delegated proof of stake only, so "stake" and "delegate" mean the same thing (Hyperliquid staking docs). Hyperliquid's how to stake HYPE guide lists four websites for staking: the official staking page at app.hyperliquid.xyz/staking, Nansen, ValiDAO and Hypurrscan. The steps are the same on each.

  1. Hold HYPE in your HyperCore spot balance. If your HYPE is on HyperEVM, move it to HyperCore first.
  2. Transfer HYPE from spot to staking. This transfer completes at once.
  3. Delegate to a validator. Pick one or more validators. Each delegation is locked for 1 day.

To unstake, reverse the steps.

  1. Undelegate from the validator. After the 1-day lock, you can undelegate part or all of it, and the HYPE shows up in your staking balance at once.
  2. Transfer from staking to spot. This enters a 7-day queue.
  3. Wait 7 days. The HYPE then appears in your spot balance.

The two locks are separate, and mixing them up is a common source of confusion about Hyperliquid unstaking. The 1-day lock applies to a delegation. The 7-day queue applies only to the staking-to-spot transfer. The staking docs give an example: a 100 HYPE transfer started at 08:00:00 UTC on 11 March finalises at 08:00:01 UTC on 18 March. An address can have at most 5 withdrawals in the queue at once.

Spot to stakingNoneNot needed

UndelegateNone after the 1-day lockNot needed

Smart contracts can stake too. The CoreWriter system contract on HyperEVM, at 0x3333333333333333333333333333333333333333, exposes "Token delegate", "Staking deposit" and "Staking withdraw" as actions 3, 4 and 5 (CoreWriter actions). Liquid staking token (LST) operators, which the HIP-3 spec mentions by name, stake HYPE on their users' behalf. An LST is a separate product with its own operator, terms and risks, so read its documentation before you use it.

What is the Hyperliquid staking APR?#

The Hyperliquid staking reward rate depends on how much HYPE is staked in total. The docs say the rate is "inversely proportional to the square root of total HYPE staked", a design borrowed from Ethereum, and that it is about 2.37% a year at 400 million HYPE staked.

reward rate ≈ 2.37% × √( 400,000,000 / total HYPE staked )

Approximate. The 2.37% anchor at 400 million HYPE is from Hyperliquid's staking docs. Validator commission is deducted from this rate.

On 2 November 2026 the official Hyperliquid staking page showed 439,605,816 HYPE staked. Using the formula, that gives a gross rate of about 2.26% a year. Validators then take their commission. The same page listed estimated APRs between 2.12% and 2.24% for its validators, with commissions from 0% to 5%. The rate moves whenever total stake changes, so check the page before you rely on a number. Because rewards are redelegated daily, the compounded APY is slightly higher than the APR the page shows: about 2.14% to 2.27% at those rates if they held for a year.

Four rules decide what you actually earn:

  • Rewards come from the future emissions reserve. They are newly issued HYPE, not a share of trading fees.
  • Rewards accrue every minute and are paid daily. They are redelegated to the same validator automatically, so they compound.
  • Rewards follow your minimum balance in each epoch. An epoch is 100,000 consensus rounds, about 90 minutes on mainnet. HYPE added partway through an epoch earns from the next full epoch.
  • A jailed validator earns nothing. Validators can vote to jail a peer that responds too slowly. While a validator is jailed, its delegators get no rewards.

Can you lose staked HYPE? Validators, jailing and slashing#

As of 2 November 2026, Hyperliquid has no automatic slashing for stakers. That is not a guarantee against penalties. The staking docs reserve slashing for provably malicious behaviour such as double-signing, and say the 7-day withdrawal queue lets consensus attacks be penalized by slashing or social-layer mechanisms. Jailing is different. A jailed validator stops taking part in consensus and stops earning rewards until it fixes the problem and unjails itself.

The main risks for a staker are these:

  • Lost rewards. You earn nothing while your validator is jailed. Delegating to a validator with good uptime is the only fix.
  • Commission changes. A validator cannot raise its commission unless the new rate is 1% or lower. This stops a validator from attracting stake and then raising its fee sharply.
  • Lockups. In a fast market, your HYPE is at least 7 days from your spot balance once it is staked.
  • Consensus trust. HyperBFT needs a quorum, meaning validators holding more than two-thirds of stake, to be honest. The docs say every staker is responsible for delegating only to trusted validators.

Running a validator or a non-validating node is permissionless. The active set is the top 27 validators by stake (running a validator). A validator needs 10,000 HYPE of self-delegation, locked for one year, to be active. If its self-delegation drops below 10,000 HYPE, it goes into undelegate-only mode and can no longer accept new delegations.

What are the Hyperliquid staking tiers?#

Hyperliquid staking tiers cut your trading fees based on how much HYPE you have staked. The discount applies across perps, HIP-3 perps and spot (Hyperliquid fees).

TierHYPE stakedFee discountTier 0 perp taker fee (base 0.045%)
None10 or less0%0.0450%
WoodMore than 105%0.0428%
BronzeMore than 10010%0.0405%
SilverMore than 1,00015%0.0383%
GoldMore than 10,00020%0.0360%
PlatinumMore than 100,00030%0.0315%
DiamondMore than 500,00040%0.0270%

Only staked HYPE counts. HYPE sitting in your spot balance gives no discount. The discount stacks with your volume tier, so a high-volume trader with Diamond staking pays less again. For worked examples across every fee type, see the complete guide to Hyperliquid fees.

Staking linking#

You can stake from one address and trade from another by linking them. The fees docs list strict conditions:

  • Linking is permanent. It cannot be undone.
  • Both addresses must belong to you. The staking address can move all funds out of the linked trading address in one irreversible transaction, using the HyperliquidTransaction:StakingLinkDisableTradingUser action. That action locks the trading address, and a year later its funds pass to the staking address.
  • After linking, the staking address loses its own staking discount.
  • If you stake and trade from one address, you do not need to link anything.

Never link a trading address to a staking address that someone else controls.

A staking referral program, where builders and referrers who stake HYPE would keep part of their users' fees, appears in the docs as a proposal only. As of 2 November 2026 the page says it is being re-evaluated and is not live on mainnet (staking referral proposal).

Why do Hyperliquid market deployers stake HYPE?#

HIP-3 perp deployers, HIP-4 outcome deployers and teams behind qualifying quote assets put HYPE at stake, and validators can vote to slash that stake if the deployer breaks the rules. Not every listing needs a stake: a HIP-1 spot token pays a gas auction instead, and USDC and USDT are exempt from the quote-asset stake. This is how Hyperliquid lets outside teams list markets without a central listing desk.

Sources: HIP-3 spec, HIP-4 deployer actions, permissionless spot quote assets and aligned quote assets.

The HIP-4 deployer page adds one rule: stake requirements stack. HYPE that counts toward a HIP-3 deployment does not also count toward an outcome deployment. The HIP-3 spec says the slashing rules apply whoever owns the stake, so it warns liquid staking operators to vet deployers carefully and to explain slashing risk to their users.

For the full deployer model, read how HIP-3 builder-deployed perpetuals work and how HIP-4 outcome markets work.

How the Assistance Fund buys and burns HYPE#

The Hyperliquid Assistance Fund converts trading fees into HYPE automatically, as part of L1 execution. It uses the system address 0xfefefefefefefefefefefefefefefefefefefefe, and the fees docs say HYPE in the fund "is burned, removing the tokens permanently from the circulating and total supply."

That status was settled by a vote. On 17 December 2025 the Hyper Foundation proposed a validator vote to treat Assistance Fund HYPE as burned. It explained that the address "has never had a private key" and that the funds are "mathematically irretrievable without a hard fork." A yes vote meant binding social consensus never to approve an upgrade that touches the address. Hyperliquid's announcements channel reported the result: 85% of stake voted for burning, 7% against and 8% abstained.

On 2 November 2026 the Hypurrscan page for the Assistance Fund address showed about 48.42 million HYPE at that address. The balance grows as fees come in, so treat any figure as a dated snapshot.

HYPE leaves supply in two other documented ways:

  • HyperEVM gas. HyperEVM burns base fees as standard EIP-1559 chains do. It also burns priority fees, which the docs attribute to HyperEVM running on HyperBFT consensus.
  • HIP-3 slashing. HYPE slashed from a HIP-3 deployer is burned, not paid to affected users.

The Assistance Fund also has a second source of revenue. Under AQAv2, stablecoin deployers share about 90% of cost-adjusted reserve yield on their Hyperliquid supply with the protocol, and that yield is sent to the Assistance Fund automatically, where it feeds the same buy-and-burn.

Hyperliquid's docs say trading fees go "entirely" to the community, split between HLP, the Assistance Fund and deployers. The docs do not publish the exact share that goes to the Assistance Fund. Posts on X quote several different percentages, and none of them is an official figure, so this guide does not repeat them. HLP's share is covered in the guide to Hyperliquid vaults and HLP.

HYPE supply and token distribution#

The Hyper Foundation announced the HYPE genesis for 07:30 UTC on 29 November 2024. Its genesis blog post set a max supply of 1,000,000,000 HYPE, split as follows:

AllocationShare of max supplyHYPE
Future emissions and community rewards38.888%388,880,000 (unminted at genesis)
Genesis distribution31.0%310,000,000 (fully unlocked)
Current and future core contributors23.8%238,000,000
Hyper Foundation budget6.0%60,000,000
Community grants0.3%3,000,000
HIP-2 (Hyperliquidity)0.012%120,000

The same post says core contributor tokens were locked for one year after genesis, that most vesting schedules finish between 2027 and 2028, and that some continue after 2028. It also says there were no allocations for private investors, centralised exchanges or market makers. Genesis tokens that went unclaimed moved to future emissions. Staking rewards come from that future emissions bucket.

The genesis post gives these broad vesting terms, not a month-by-month unlock calendar, so treat any specific monthly unlock figure you see elsewhere as a third-party estimate. The same goes for circulating supply, which depends on how each tracker counts burned, staked and unvested HYPE.
