Oil on Hyperliquid: WTI, Brent and gold perps

11 min read

By the Totalis team. We build the combo platform for prediction markets on Hyperliquid.

Oil on Hyperliquid trades as perpetual futures, not barrels or dated contracts. The two crude markets are xyz:WTIOIL (WTI) and xyz:BRENTOIL (Brent), listed by the trade[XYZ] deployer under HIP-3. Each tracks the USD price of one barrel, taken from designated futures contracts that roll monthly. Both settle in USDC, allow up to 20x leverage and trade around the clock, including weekends, when the oracle switches to the perp's own order book within set limits. Gold, silver, natural gas, copper and diesel also trade as trade[XYZ] perps.

This page explains how these markets work. It is not trading advice.

Can you trade oil on Hyperliquid?#

Yes, outside the US. Oil on Hyperliquid is a set of perpetual futures that an outside team, trade[XYZ], deploys under HIP-3, Hyperliquid's system for builder-deployed perps. trade[XYZ] picks the markets, writes the contract rules and publishes the oracle price. HyperCore runs the order book, margin, liquidations and settlement. trade[XYZ]'s architecture page lists the xyz deployer address as 0x88806a71D74ad0a510b350545C9aE490912F0888 and says its relayers publish prices about every three seconds.

The perps never expire and never deliver oil. Profit and loss is paid in USDC. Hyperliquid's own validators do not list or price these markets, and the Hyperliquid app marks each one as "deployed independently by xyz" with a warning about "low liquidity, high volatility, and increased liquidation risk" (seen on 2 November 2026). For the deployer model itself, see HIP-3 builder-deployed perpetuals explained.

The WTI market has changed name. The Hyperliquid Policy Center's research and early links call it xyz:CL, and trade[XYZ]'s docs still write "WTIOIL (CL)". On 2 November 2026 the WTI market page showed it as WTIOIL-USDC, and an xyz:CL link redirected there.

Which commodity perps trade on Hyperliquid?#

Every commodity perp below is a trade[XYZ] market. Entropy, the other main deployer of stock perps, lists equities, ETFs and pre-IPO names but no commodities in its docs. The figures come from trade[XYZ]'s specification index as of 2 November 2026.

xyz:COPPER1 pound of high-grade copper, designated futures20xIsolatedAbout +10.3% / -9.8%

The last column is our arithmetic from each market's discovery bound and number of resets, explained in the weekend section below. trade[XYZ] also lists an energy-sector ETF perp (xyz:XLE) and Chevron (xyz:CVX), which are stocks, not commodities. Those, and why "Hyperliquid stock" means several different things, are in the Hyperliquid stock guide.

Gold has one more route. Hyperliquid's validators run a PAXG perp on a gold-backed token, and Hyperliquid's fee rules cite it as the reason HIP-3 gold perps cannot use growth mode.

How is the Hyperliquid oil price set?#

Crude oil has no single spot price, so trade[XYZ] does what most oil benchmarks do and references futures. Its commodities methodology names a designated contract for each month and rolls between contracts over five business days:

Business day of the monthFront contractNext contract
5th100%0%
6th80%20%
7th60%40%
8th40%60%
9th20%80%
10th0%100%

trade[XYZ]'s roll schedule dates each roll. In November 2026, WTI moves from the December 2026 contract (Z6) to January 2027 (F7) and Brent from January (F7) to February 2027 (G7), between 6 November and 12 November at 5:30 p.m. ET. A WTI perp in early November tracks the December contract, which is why it can differ from a "spot" or front-month figure quoted elsewhere during the roll.

Gold, silver, platinum and palladium have liquid spot markets, so their oracles use spot prices, with no roll.

The oracle feeds two things. It is the reference for funding, and it is one input to the mark price that drives margin and liquidations. trade[XYZ]'s mark price is the median of three values: the oracle, the oracle plus a 150-second average of the perp's premium, and the median of best bid, best ask and last trade on Hyperliquid. Each relayer update can move the oracle and mark by at most 50 basis points.

Does Hyperliquid oil trade on weekends?#

Yes. The order book never closes, but the external price does. trade[XYZ]'s specification gives WTI external pricing from Sunday 6:00 p.m. to Friday 5:00 p.m. ET, with a daily maintenance window from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET Monday to Thursday. The same table lists Brent's external session as running to 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Energy markets also follow trade[XYZ]'s holiday closures, such as the shortened sessions on 26 and 27 November 2026 for Thanksgiving.

When the external price stops, trade[XYZ]'s oracle methodology moves the oracle by a 30-minute moving average of the gap between the order book's impact prices and the oracle. Buyers lift it and sellers push it down. When futures reopen, the oracle returns to the external price on the next tick.

Discovery bounds: how far oil can move over a weekend#

Discovery bounds limit that drift. For xyz:WTIOIL at 20x the band is ±5% around the last external price. When the oracle reaches 90% of the way to an edge, the band re-anchors at that edge. WTI allows two re-anchors per direction, after which the edge is a hard cap until futures reopen. trade[XYZ]'s own example, from a $100 Friday close:

LevelReferenceTradeable range
0$100.00$95.00 to $105.00
1$105.00$99.75 to $110.25
2 (hard cap)$110.25$104.74 to $115.76

The ceiling is $115.76 (+15.76%) and the floor $85.74 (-14.26%). A position whose liquidation price lies outside the active band cannot be liquidated while the band applies. The risk moves to Sunday evening, when the price jumps to wherever futures reopen.

Is the weekend oil price any good?#

The evidence so far comes from an interested party. The Hyperliquid Policy Center, which advocates for US access to Hyperliquid markets, studied 19 weekends of the WTI perp in its paper Perpetual Futures as Complements to Dated Futures. In its joint comment letter with trade[XYZ] to the CFTC, filed on 26 August 2026, the two groups say the perp's weekend price was closer to the benchmark's Sunday reopening than its Friday close in nearly 75% of those weekends. They also report that on the first weekend of the Iran conflict, starting 28 February 2026, the WTI perp rose 4.6% while futures were shut, and hourly weekend volume grew from about $1 to $2 million then to peaks above $30 million by mid-March.

An independent view comes from the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, whose Hyperliquid case study finds that oil perp activity jumped after the war involving the US, Israel and Iran began, remains small next to established oil futures, and had begun to moderate.

Hyperliquid oil funding rate#

Funding is an hourly payment between longs and shorts that pulls the perp toward the oracle. trade[XYZ]'s funding page gives the formula for xyz markets as of 2 November 2026:

  • Premium: the average of the impact bid and impact ask for 1,000 USDC, divided by the oracle, minus one, averaged over the hour.
  • Base rate: the premium plus the gap between the interest input (0.01% per 8 hours) and the premium, with that gap clamped to ±0.05%.
  • trade[XYZ] multiplies that by 0.5, and one eighth of the result is paid each hour.
  • HyperCore caps funding at 4% per hour, per Hyperliquid's funding docs.
  • The payment is position size times oracle price times the hourly rate.

When longs pay, they are paying to hold a price above the oracle. Over a weekend the oracle itself is the book's moving average, so funding measures the perp against its own recent prices, not against a live futures quote.

Fees and leverage for oil and gold perps#

HIP-3 markets pay Hyperliquid's normal fee tier times a multiplier set by the deployer's fee scale: 1 plus the scale below a scale of 1, and twice the scale from 1 upward, per Hyperliquid's developer fee formula. trade[XYZ]'s fee page puts its standard base-tier taker fee at 0.090%, split evenly with Hyperliquid, and 0.0090% on growth-mode assets. Oil, natural gas, silver and the other metals are eligible for growth mode. Gold is not. The trade screen shows which rate a market currently pays. The full fee picture, including staking discounts, is in Hyperliquid fees explained.

Max leverage sets the starting margin: 20x means 5% initial margin on WTI or Brent, 25x means 4% on gold and silver. trade[XYZ] caps open interest on every market. At the cap, only position reductions go through.

The Brent spoofing report#

On 28 October 2026, Bloomberg reported an analysis by the surveillance firm Solidus Labs of oil perp orders on Hyperliquid. As summarized by crypto.news, Solidus found two accounts that placed more than $170 million of orders, mostly in Brent, between 8 and 10 March 2026, repeatedly cancelling large orders while trading on the other side of the book. Cancelled value ran about 30 times executed value, and Solidus estimated the trader's three-day profit at about $119,000. In one 9 March example, about $17 million of sell orders were cancelled against about $425,000 of executed buys.

Solidus described the pattern as consistent with spoofing but did not confirm intent, and the trader is unidentified. Hyperliquid Labs answered that every order, cancellation and trade is recorded onchain for anyone, including regulators, to review. The episode came while the CFTC was gathering evidence on energy perps: on 22 June 2026 it requested public comment on 24/7 energy futures and on perpetual contracts on physically delivered or storable energy commodities such as crude oil.

Risks of trading oil on Hyperliquid#

  • Weekend gaps. Discovery bounds stop a weekend run, not a Sunday gap. Over one weekend the mark can travel the full re-anchored range, wider than the band shown on Saturday, and the oracle jumps to the external price when futures reopen.
  • Thin books off-hours. trade[XYZ]'s perpetuals risk disclosure warns that internal liquidity can be thinner and more one-sided than the underlying market, so a small order can move the price.
  • Roll and reference risk. The perp tracks a designated futures contract on trade[XYZ]'s schedule. Your hedge may reference a different month or grade.
  • Oracle and data errors. A real but unrepresentative source print can move the mark and trigger liquidations, as a stock market on the same deployer showed in July 2026.
  • Order-book manipulation. The Solidus report describes off-hours books where large orders were placed and cancelled while the same trader dealt on the other side. Orders that cross a thin book fill at whatever prices rest there, and leveraged positions can be liquidated if the mark moves.
  • Access. trade[XYZ]'s general disclaimer prohibits US persons. No regulated US route exists as of 2 November 2026. Intercontinental Exchange signed an agreement on 29 October 2026 to operate regulated US versions of trade[XYZ] markets once approvals are in place, per ICE's press release. For access today, see using Hyperliquid in the US.

A bounded alternative: outcome markets#

A perp is open-ended: the loss can reach your whole margin, and liquidation can come before you are proven right. Hyperliquid's other market type, HIP-4 outcome markets (its version of prediction markets), works differently. Each position is a fully collateralized Yes or No token that settles between 0 and 1, so the most you can lose is what you paid. The mechanics are in HIP-4 outcome markets explained, and the case for bounded price markets is in HIP-4 scalar markets as bounded options.

Totalis, which publishes this guide, builds on those HIP-4 markets rather than on HIP-3 perps, and its docs explain how a Combo of outcomes settles and what Combos cost. The Totalis app trades HIP-4 outcome markets one at a time or as Combos. For the wider network, start with what Hyperliquid is.

Frequently asked questions#

Why is the Hyperliquid oil price different from the price on the news?#

The perp tracks a designated futures month, which during a roll is a blend of two contracts. It also keeps trading when futures are closed. A headline "oil price" may be a different month, a different grade or Friday's settlement.
